Wheaton History

Jarvis Hunt designed a stately home for Charles Blair Macdonald, the founder of the Chicago Golf Club, near the club's grounds in Wheaton, Illinois. The house, named Ballyshear, was inspired by Macdonald's childhood home in Scotland, reflecting a blend of traditional and timeless architectural elements.

Ballyshear embodied Hunt’s architectural sophistication and Macdonald’s personal connection to his heritage. The home featured a Colonial Revival style, characterized by symmetry, classical proportions, and elegant detailing, which were well-suited to the surrounding landscape and the prestige of Chicago Golf Club. Ballyshear became a hub of social activity and a testament to Macdonald’s influence in American golf.

The home’s name, Ballyshear, gained additional prominence when Macdonald later carried it to his summer residence at National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York, where he founded another iconic golf course. The legacy of the original Ballyshear near Chicago Golf Club reflects the partnership between two visionaries—Macdonald, the pioneer of American golf, and Hunt, the renowned architect—who together shaped the cultural and architectural identity of the sport.

Today, the house stands as a significant part of Wheaton’s historical and architectural heritage, preserved by efforts to maintain the integrity of Hunt’s designs and Macdonald’s enduring legacy.
