Wheaton History

Jarvis Hunt, a nationally renowned architect, designed and oversaw the construction of the Chicago Golf Club clubhouse from 1912 to 1913, after previously transforming the original farmhouse on the Wheaton property into the club's first clubhouse. The current clubhouse became Hunt’s 15th listing on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2020.

Born in Weathersfield, Vermont in 1863, Hunt was influenced by his uncle, Richard Morris Hunt, a pioneer of Beaux-Arts architecture. After studying at Harvard and MIT, Hunt became known for his traditional Beaux-Arts designs, which were reflected in notable works like Kansas City Union Station and Joliet Station.

Hunt’s career in Chicago began with his winning design for the Vermont State Pavilion at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, after which he established a flourishing architectural practice. He was a leader in the City Beautiful movement and designed several prominent Chicago landmarks, including the Lake Shore Athletic Club and the Great Lakes Naval Training Center.

Hunt’s passion for golf extended beyond architecture. He qualified for the 1904 Olympic Golf Team, was a member of Chicago Golf Club and National Golf Links of America, and designed their clubhouses. In Wheaton, he also designed homes for Chicago Golf Club members, including one for founder C.B. Macdonald.

Hunt retired in 1927 and passed away in 1941. Though his work was celebrated in his time, his legacy remains overshadowed by contemporaries like Daniel Burnham and Louis Sullivan.
